This free one-day training course provides participants with practical skills and tools to deal with burnout and build team strength.
The learning outcomes of this programme are suitable for team managers and individual aid workers.
On completion of this training participants will:

– be aware of the signs of burnout in self and team members;
– acquire skills to recover from burnout
– know how to recognise signs of trauma in refugees
– have strategies for dealing with exposure to trauma
ABOUT THE TRAINER
The course will be given by Ms. Paula Lonergan.
With many years of organisational capacity building in both the NGO and Corporate sectors, Paula Lonergan brings a combination of intellectual rigour, skill and creativity to her work. In 2008, she was commissioned to develop and publish a range of professional development training products for One Family to support frontline workers in areas such as crisis pregnancy and family change. These funded programmes were externally evaluated achieving Best Practice for professional training by the then Family Support Agency. Her programmes were widely delivered into small and large family support organisations throughout Ireland and she has been invited to deliver and present on them internationally in the UK, Bulgaria, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands.
An expert facilitator, Paula is a qualified mediator and registered with the Mediators Institute Ireland. On the strength of this, she is a competent conflict management trainer and has developed bespoke training for Teams which have been delivered across the health and charity sectors including HSE, Barnardos and Tusla.
Previous to this, Paula studied in Ireland, the UK and France, attaining her Masters in Linguistics and Literature at the University of Toulouse, France. After receiving her training qualifications in Professional Development, Paula worked in Siemens, Toulouse as Head of Language Training where she was responsible for training seminars across three European locations (Paris, Toulouse and Munich). During this time, she became involved in the work of a number of refugee support organisations including CIMADE, offering interpreter services and organising events inside refugee reception centres.
On her return to Ireland in 2001, Paula worked directly with refugees and asylum seekers in the European Language Portfolio project with Trinity College where over a period of three years she developed and piloted specialist training specific to the language needs of incoming new communities. In conjunction with this, she worked as an interpreter for the Dept. of Justice within the refugee status process. In this role she interpreted in both preliminary interviews and appeals tribunals.
Paula’s recent work has included the development a large change management programme commissioned by the HSE and delivered nationally over eighteen months. She has also been involved in the pilot and delivery of a Civil Service wide programme aimed at team building and performance management.
In the area of Resilience training, Paula has developed one-day and three day programmes aimed at supporting frontline workers across a diverse range of organisations. Emphasising self-awareness and team work, these programmes have been successful in building individual and team strength for a range of professions including ward and community nurses, frontline charity workers such as Enable Ireland, the CRC, Bloomfield Mental Health Services, Ana Liffey Drugs Project amongst others. Paula has recently won a large tender to develop and deliver resilience training to a large national institution and this will commence this Autumn.
Training undertaken with Irish Aid, Partners Ireland and Kimage DSC provided insights into areas such as cultural competence, development and training for transformation and there approached inform and underpin all material and course development.
